Well indeed - but rallying is supposed to be a sport after all, conducted by professionals, in (reasonably) controlled conditions.
I agree, I think rallying is a much more legitimate sport than, say, NASCAR. Put a NASCAR driver in a rally car, and a rally driver in a NASCAR race and in an instant you'll have one wrecked rally car and one incredibly bored rally driver. OK OK my apologies to NASCAR fans.

When I was talking about drifting, I was thinking of the more recent onset of tarmac (or street) based drifting popularized by Japan.

Wasn't thinking about rallying since the video was taken on the street. Same principle, tho - controlled sliding, but I suppose you could say track drifting is trying to slide on a sticky surface "for show," while rally driving is trying to grip on a slippery surface "for go." I have tremendous respect for any driver who can drive at 105% of their tires' potential...

Quite often rally drivers from the WRC scene get put into F1 cars, and vice versa. The F1 drivers are often taken aback by basic stuff like the fast-changing scenery of rallying and the fact that going sideways actually helps (normally, it's anathaema). And yeah, I guess once they get over the kick out of the G-force, rally drivers don't get much out of going real fast in a straight line .

I was introduced to the concept of, and developerd a passion for, RWD after watching some rally stages in the mid-80s. Seeing Hannu Mikkola and Tony Pond in graceful action - especially Mikkola - was just as engaging as watching any other sport. Bit of a diversion, but that was drifting escalated to an art form

Watch the race of champions on Speed Channel. It will settle all of these disputes. I think that Rally drivers are the most skilled though. The amount of car control is rediculous.
