 Darned rear defroster switch cluster

How in the hell do you re-install that thing once it pops free from the metal plate underneath? It's the switch cluster that contains the rear defrost just to the right of the driver's right elbow in the M cars. It has four tabs, and drops down into the center console. There's a metal plate underneath that is supposed to grab those four tabs, but it's just about impossible (IMHO) to do it.

Anybody have any tips or tricks on how to get this all back together?

Tell me about it! I spent hours trying to get the switch panel to snap into and stay engaged in that metal frame when installing a defroster switch for my hardtop. I previously had just a storage bin in that location, to which the metal frame had been snapped securely. However, on close inspection I finally determined that although the metal frame apparently is only supposed to install one way on the back of my new switch panel, the tabs on the back of the panel would just not stay engaged in the metal frame, when I was even able to snap the two pieces together. The tabs on the back of the storage bin are much more substantial. I finally had to give up and just used rubber cement around the lip of the panel without the frame. It has been holding okay.

As part of installing the switch per the instructions, I had the cup holder out, the emergency brake boot popped out, and the two screws on the sides of the rear of the console out (and maybe also another screw or two securing the console under the cup holder, I can't remember). This will allow you to lift up the rear of the console a little and you can barely get a couple of fingers under the back edge of the console and maybe be able to push or hold on the back of the metal frame to help engage the tabs on the switch plate. But for me, the tabs would not stay engaged in the frame.
