 Clutch Line CDV

I'm looking into replacing my clutch hose on my '02 M Coupe to get rid of the built-in CDV. I'm in agreement with many that the clutch feel on this car is extremely poor compared to other BMWs I own.

I've read a bunch of stuff here and elsewhere and it seems that there's support for using the AN-3 stainless steel hose for this purpose.

Here's what I've just discovered in talking to Earl's (the place that's making up my hose). AN-3 has an internal bore of 0.06", which equates to roughly 1.5mm. This is the same diameter as the restrictor that I'm trying to remove. I honestly don't see how those that have used AN-3 have solved anything.

According to the guy I spoke to, the hard lines for the clutch (if they're the same as those for brake lines, which I believe they are) have a bore of 0.095" (~2.4mm). So any hose beyond that bore size isn't necessary. AN-4 has a bore of 0.17" (~4.3mm), which is the next available size. This is what I just had Earl's make up for me. Note: I had read that Earl's couldn't use AN-4 with the proper fittings, but he had it made up for me by the time I finished the phone call.

So I'd really like to know... have those that used AN-3 really felt a difference? If so, the only explanation I can see is moving from rubber hose to SS hose... it's certainly not from removing the 1.5mm restriction.

Thanks,
Blaine

You may have solved a puzzle.

Which Earl's shop made these AN-4 lines and couplings up for you?

PS: Thanks again for the referral to Stokes Tire. I've been back again, and the KMAC rear adjustments scarcely shifted.

Not sure, but I though the lines on BMWs are metric, not AN sized? Earl's (and others) have adapters for AN>Metric and Metric>AN sizes, but I've not pulled the lines to check. Same for brake lines, btw.

I used Earl's Store #1 in Lawndale (CA for the non-locals). I talked to Tom.

He said he used up his last two adaptors on my hose. He gets very little demand for this type of application. I told him that he may be getting more demand soon and he replied that the adaptors are readily available.

Glad to hear that Stokes Tire worked out... they're one of the few shops I'll trust my car with.

I believe the AN refers only to the hose sizes and not the fittings. There are definitely metric fittings on the the ends of the hose (10mm x 1.0). Regardless, he was quite familiar with the fittings required for making hoses up for BMW brake lines (and consequently clutch lines).

Not sure whether Europe uses the AN system or not, but I find it to be quite a coincidence that the OEM Z3 rubber clutch hose has a 4.3mm bore (same as AN-4). Then again, the Z3 is made in the USA.

From a couple of prior threads discussing the stock Z3 and MZ3 hoses versus an apparent AN-3 SS hose. Maybe the AN-4 hose is the way to go, but even with this size what will be the sizes of the openings in the fittings?
