Since autumn starts this week, I'm thinking about what I need to do to keep my new Z4 roadworthy this winter. I'm thinking of buying a set of 17" wheels and Blizzaks to replace the 18" wheels and performance tires over the winter. Anything wrong with this plan? Any tips?

If it was my only car I would do it.
I am lucky to have two cars so I garage it until there is a nice clear day and then I take it out for a spin.

I tried that last year with the 2.5i having a set of 16" winter tires, and the 3.0i keeping the summers...annoying when I was stuck @ home for a week w/o a vehicle
this year I bought a set of 17" wheels for the 3.0i, which are now sitting in the garage waiting for tires
does make a huge dif though...w/the RE50A's, the Z4 is a death trap in even a light dusting of snow imo, but with some decent winter tires it does remarkably well in my experience (not that we get "all" that much snow here in KY)

Would I be voiding any warranties or anything?

in fact last year I had the dealer put on one of the winter wheels (couldn't get the oem wheel off for the life of me, got tired of kicking it lol)- they did it for no charge, no questions asked, while I test drove an x5 to kill some time
I'd say it's pretty common/expected when you have max performance summer tires on a car in an area prone to snow if bmw didn't allow it I would think that they would be opening themselves up to some liability issues

lets see here..... i'm guessing you will be into your Z's winter setup 5-700 bucks. i would drop another 300 and get like an 80's toyota pickup or something like that. the thing is, i really care about my car, and i'm more worried about other people's driving in the snow than mine. i would much rather have them crash into me if i was not in my M. also, you'll keep the salt off of your car, and your car out of the weather. just a thought!
