 M3 Roadster sound system

Does anyone know what the white wire is for that is connected up to the antenna base. Wondering of it is power to an amplifier (base unit)? I have replaced my head unit (not HK anymore) and bypassed (got rid of) the amp. When playing CD's all is great, but the radio reception is still about the same (poor). Discovered that I get better reception (AM and FM) hanging a coat hanger off of the antenna lead. It seems that the antenna base is either bad or a piece of junk like the rest of the system. I am debating whether or not to spring for a new base (100 bucks) or install some other aftermarket antenna.

That's the amplifier turn-on lead from the head unit. It runs to the audio amplifier(s) in the rear as well as the antenna ampifier. It tells them to power up when the head unit is powered up. If your new head unit has a power amp turn-on lead, wire it to the white wire on the antenna amplifier.

You can do this through the car's radio harness; it's pin 16 on the radio connector (white wire).

EDIT: that's assuming you didn't snip the white wire when you got rid of the stock amplifier...

Thanks for the gouge! I redid all the connections and any wires that were unused, I taped off. So will be able to connect it up to some power, I assume that ( ) I need 12 VDC?

Hoping that the reception is better than the stock HK!

It's not really power, it's a signal line to tell the amplifier(s) to come on. With the stock head unit (or any with an amplifier turn-on lead, like all three of the Alpine head units I've bought over the last several years), that line gets ~ 12V when the head unit is turned on. It is indended for low current; the input to the antenna amplifier and the audio amplifier(s) for this wire are both high impedance, since the head unit output for this line is not designed for much current.

You don't want to put constant 12V on this line, unless you want your battery to be draining while your car is parked. Ideally it should come on and off with the head unit. Many aftermarket head units have an amplifier turn-on output, and if yours has one, that's what you should use. Your next best option would be switched power (on in accessory, run and start key positions).

No-one else mentioned this Alan, but I wonder...

...Do you have a 2000 M3 Convertible, or a 2000 M Roadster?

The Z3-based car is called the M Roadster.

Yeah, plan to power the antenna amp from the head unit.

BTW, I have a 2000 M3 Roadster Convertable. There does seem to be a lot of confusion on what kind of animal the M3 Roadster is. most peaople dont know about it.

Soggy in San Diego!
