I am the owner of a 2002 3.0i Roadster and follow the comments on this site daily. When I made the decision to buy the last year of the Z3 it was based on two things. First the asthetics vs. the Z4 which has been beaten to death in theses threads and secondly and more to the point of this question I made the assumption that a car at the end of it's production run was better than one at the beggining. After reading all the maladies of the Z3 I'm a bit paranoid, and waiting for either my gas guage to go wacky, my seat to loosen up, my fuses to start blowing, my window to start squeaking or worst yet my rear end to fall apart. Has anyone analysed these problems by year or model and are Europeans experiencing the same ?

The fact of the matter may be that the last year of production of the Z3 is better than the early models. But there are just some things that were not improved, like the seat bushings, the sagging glovebox, and unfortunately the poor design of the rear subframe. I would imagine that the European models are having the same problems since all Z3s were produced in South Carolina.

The guy I bought my Z3 from was pretty sure it was built in Germany as he refused to buy and sell the Z3's built in the US? He has been in the business for 30 years, so I guess he knew what he was talking about?
As for the typical problems, I do have some seat movement and a sagging glove box but those are not 'major' issues for me. Mechanically the car seems pretty solid and that's what counts, right? Apart from the small issues, I would say the say Z3 is

From http://www.bmwmregistry.com/model_faq.php?id=16:
"Where was the M roadster built? Like all Z3-based cars, every M roadster was assembled at the Spartanburg, South Carolina factory. The drivetrain was assembled in Germany and mated with the rest of the car at Spartanburg."
Many others have indicated the same thing on several forums.
The seat bushings and sagging glovebox are not major issues for me either. I'm on my second Z3. I just indicated that these were two items that were never improved upon during the entire production of the Z3.
