 New to bimmerfest

Hello everyone,
I'm new here to bimmerfest and wanted to say that it is already a breath of fresh air seeing so many active Z owners on the forum. The previous site was predominately M3 owners (nothing wrong with that, just nice to chat with folks from the same breed). I look forward to gaining some knowledge here and if I can, help spread what little I have!

Welcome. So you swapped in an M engine and trans in your '96? I'd be interested in what your exhaust and chassis bracing look like. Has the stock differential held up okay? Please post some pictures if possible.

The exhaust is nothing more than a 2 into 1 right after the rear couplers before the muffler. It's really nothing to special, it just allows me to say I have a "custom" exhaust. I've debated on cutting out the spare tire compartment to make room for dual exhaust but I kind of like the "sleeper" effect the car has.

If you have every seen the Strong Strut body brace and butt brace it's very similar to what I have. For their chassis brace they use the existing bolt in the X brace and the bar makes contact along the unibody to the rear where it is bolted to the butt brace that runs from side to side on the rear control arm mounts. Their system runs around 895.00 for everything. I went a step farther and actually welded plates to the unibody and tapped them and bolted the brace in with grade 8 bolts. There is no possibilty of the bar not being in contact with the unibody at anytime. The rear brace was made from flat bar and angled to clear the exhaust, then tied into the chassis brace by welding. This was just a prototype and I think in the near future the mounting plates will come off and I will weld 1x2 1/2" rectangular box to the unibody itself. I also have a new design for the rear brace as well. The difference that this makes is insane! I did this after my motor swap with the stock 1.9 suspension and it felt like I had put some serious sway bars on it. The "wagging" in the rear end was eliminated (you know the feeling, when you hit little bumps in the road). The car cornered flatter and felt more solid.

So far the rear end has held up fine. And believe me, I'm not easy on the car at all. I've taken it to the 1/8th mile and romped on it hard and at the recent autocross blew both my motormounts! By the way, I found out that the Group M motor mounts (695.00 a pair!) are nothing more that parts number shaved 750i motor mounts. They moved the motor back enough that 1st, 3rd and 5th are were neutral used to be. Made a huge difference in weight distribution (enough to feel). As a bonus they're only 180.00 for the pair.

Thanks for the inquiry, it's nice to have found a site were people share the same interests!

I am amazed that that 1.9 rearend is holding up,or let me say I am impressed.I thought that the 1.9 was a different rear end than the six cyl.models in the early years at least
