A friend of mine is shopping for an S54-powered machine and asked me if there was any way to tell if the engine is original.
I am thinking that maybe the engines are stamped with VIN numbers somewhere?
Any input?

The engines have a number stamped/etched/machined into them, but it does not seem to correspond to the VIN. Service records would be the best way to tell.

That would be one of the questions I'd have prepared for a pre-purchase inspection at the dealer.....

Why? Is he looking for one WITH or WITHOUT a changed motor?

And if it was replaced, you need to find out if it was one of the newest ones once they got the bearings finally (we hope) straightened out.
