Brakes are on!
Ok, so I got my cross cast brembo rotors installed this saturday. Took me about 6 hours because I washed and waxed each wheel, because I thought the new low dust pads would be low dust.
WRONG. Oh well. They are metal masters, but something tells me these pads are getting chewed up by the holes in the brakes. I dont know.
I had the brakes plated using a black cadmium/nickel process that should keep the insides and hat from rusting. I wont do that again. It cost me about $120 for four rotors. I was expecting half that.
Anyways, so I got them bolted up, after a few grunts and moans and I torqued everything to spec except the really big bolts that hold the caliper carriers on. Those took a breaker bar to put on, so I just snugged them up as tight as I could. I will go back again when I have a larger torque wrench.
Anyways, dust is everywhere, and I am running Axxis Metal Master pads. I thought they would be pretty good. I may upgrade to ultimates in the next year or so if this dust doesnt die down.
I had a big of rubbing, and then a thump-thump-thump from the rear brakes, but that goes away with a medium pedal application. I guess its rubbing the pads a good bit back there. Anyway, I am happy with the look, even if it doesnt do anything, but I would really like to see some low dust performance. Maybe I am dreaming. I cleaned all the brake dust out of hte wheel wells and off hte inside of the wheels, and it looks like I might have plenty more to replace it.
The CFBMW guys got together for a drive though the backroads of cleremont and it was a very hilly area. I thought it was fun, and the new brakes got a good workout. It was a full weekend, as always.

| | Reply » Brakes are on! | Mistake 1 - Metal Masters are NOT low dust pads. Lower than stock, but not really low dust.
Axxis Deluxe or Deluxe Plus, Mintex red box, these are low dust pads. And lower noise.
Back when Repco (then PBR, no Axxis) came to the US, Deluxe was their street/autocross pad, the Metal Masters were an all out race pad, not recommended for the street.

| | Reply » Brakes are on! | Zeckhausen's site indicates that the Ultimates are not "considered a low-dust pad, but usually produces slightly less dust than original factory pads." So it sounds like they would be about the same as the Metal Masters.

Any suggestions on high performance, low dust pads?
