November '05 BMW Group Sales Report

BMW Group vehicle sales in November were up 11.4% when compared to last November. YTD sales for the first 11 months of 2005 were up a mere 4.2%.

Sales of the X Series were down 33.8% when compared to November, 2004 while car sales were up a rousing 43.9% as the 3,5 and 7 Series had an extremely good month.

Sales of the BMW brand were up 14.2% when compared to last November.

Total November MB sales of 18,284 units represent a 2.9% decrease from last November when 18,832 units were sold. 2005 YTD sales for MB are down 0.9%. MB sales would have been much lower save for introduction of the 2006 M Class in April and YTD sales of the SLK. Sales of the M Class were up 27.5% when compared to November, 2004 while YTD sales of the SLK were up 82.0%.

This month I have added a complete report for Lexus as I believe that the introduction of the new IS250 and IS350 models is going to the BMW 3 Series a real challenge in the coming months. Note that November sales of the Lexus IS250 and IS350 totaled 4,447 units while the new E90 3 Series sedans totaled 8,884 units. I’m betting that this sales gap will close in each of the next few months. In any event it will be fun to watch.

Please visit my website for the complete Lexus and Mercedes-Benz sales reports.

Please note that I only report the United States sales data.

I would be interested in hearing theories about why the X3 is doing so poorly. I was originally impressed with it when I saw it at its introduction. If I had been in the market for an SAV I would have gotten one. Is the it price?

I owned an '04 X3 3.0 for a year so I'm somewhat qualified to give my theory. It was really a good vehicle compared to mid-level SUVs, but based on value for the price (40k), it fell short. Build quality was good, but interior quality, especially the materials and components used always seemed low quality. The dashboard and door panels appeared to be made of low quality plastic even though they weren't. Radio and ventilation controls also seemed low budget.

Front driver & passenger room was good, but very cramped in the back. It was almost impossible for three average sized adults to sit back there comfortably, especially with heavy winter clothing.

Cargo room was not as usable as I had hoped. I often haul around my wife's wheelchair and/or wheeled walker and it was impossible to sit either one flat mainly because the wheelwells intruded so far. So they had to be angled in and always rattled around as a result.

One of the worst design flaws was the black lower body panels. They have a lip of about two inches which stuck out when the door was open. Rain, snow, ice and road grime collected there as soon as you drive the vehicle and then when entering or exiting the vehicle it was impossible to step out without getting it all over your clothes unless you had very long legs.

Engine power was good, but the vehicle was noisy and the wind whistled over my closed sunroof to the point where passengers would ask where the noise was coming from.

Overall I felt it was somewhat poorly designed & executed. My xiT solved every one of my problems and still drives like a 5-series.
