Is it possible to remove the "buffering" circuitry for the water temp gauge so it will give accurate readings? If this can not be done, has anyone replaced the stock gauge with an aftermarket unit? TIA.

You can replace one of the center-mounted gauges with aftermarket VDO. Just sold one to an E36M3 LTW guy. Sender replaces drain plug on radiator. Or you can drill and tap radiator or whatever, but that's not the easiest route.

Yes, I know I could add a real water temp gauge. But before I consider that route, curious as to whether the existing gauge can be modified so it provides accurate readings.

You would need to know the complete circuit design to know how they damped the signal. The ETM does not show you what is inside of components, just how they are connected to one another.

Neil,
I responded to your PM twice. Hopefully you got both of them.

The ETM does not show you what is inside of components, just how they are connected to one another. | I guess theoretically, you coudl disconnect the stock water temp gauge from whatever motor drives it, and then hook the needle up to a mechanism that moves it based on the actual temp (basically use the internals of the VDO gauge but hook it up to the stock needle). This would probably require careful surgery-- but I bet it could be done. what do you think?
