 The 6 speed is in....

I won't bore you with all of the same details others have posted.

I'd like to say that my shifter is exactly in the right place front to back. It is maybe 1/8" over to the right. It is very notchy. I use a UUC Short Shifter and it shifts very, very short. Did I mention it is Very Short, and Notchy, and requires extra effort?

Reading Ron's post from 8/04 about the ratios tells me why. Per Ron, "The six speeds I've shifted are all notchier than the 5 speed. The stock M-Z3 shift lever ratio is 3.34 to one. The stock six speed shift lever ratio is 5.63 to one". Tomorrow I'll try lengthening my UUC shifter using its adjustment capability. Maybe one of the heavier BMW knobs might help?

It is really cool to have the acceleration of the 3.73 rear gear and the low RPM's at highway speed of the 6th gear. The buzzy's are gone. Yee-haw!!

More later.

Dwayne, congrats. I’m jealous, since I was in a similar boat as you with the 3.73. I live with the high revs up top for now. The top gear sounds great, but I’m having a tough time justifying the cost and effort to have my cake and eat it too [acceleration and top gear]. Going back to the 3.23 LSD would be more reasonable for me right now.

I haven’t been following your progress, so could you fill me in on the costs?

Tranny ~$1900 from Brent ?

Shifter?

Driveshaft?

Install? I would most definitely have to have a shop do this.

Thanks

I did the install myself, with the help of Dan, Jim, and Shawn. Mine has been perfect for more than a year now. I drove it to HC 2004 and it was great.

The tranny was $1825 plus shipping from Europe at a cost of around 400 bucks. I have one in my garage you can have for what I got in it. It was supposed to be a replacement for the one that got destroyed in shipping. But Juker doesnt want it. Long story. Its in excellent shape. Low miles. ETC ETC. And its here, so you will have it in a couple days. Not a month.

I also have a spare driveshaft on the way that you can use for a core charge, and send me your stock one back. And if your serious, I will have the shift linkage and carrier shortened for you and thow that in the pot for a few extra bucks (whatever it costs to shorten) and you gotta give me your linkage/shifter back.

Basically a turn key kit. All the work done. Just bolt it up. Which should take a full day probably. 90% of the time is taking the crap off and putting the same stuff back on. The tranny is buried under the exhaust and the underpanels and the heat shielding.

Perfect time to install anything else you want to though. Do a clutch too if you like.

Brent gave you the run down on the tranny costs. The shifter parts resizing cost $70 at the local race shop. The driveshaft cut and balance was about $115. including shipping. I paid a veteran BMW tech $380 to install the tranny, replace the clutch cylinder hydraulic hose with a Z3 one, bleed the whole system including the brakes, replace the Supersprints with my stock mufflers, install two new fanbelts, and install various new parts involved with the installation. So, it looks like I've spent about $3K including all of the parts I purchased to outfit the upfit.

Regards,
Dwayne
