Need a dipstick for my autodim mirror ;)

I had to take my couper in to the stealer the other day to fix my evaporator box. Well, when they returned my car to me I noticed that my glovebox had a good little nick in it, the hazard button housing was cracked, and my rear view mirror seemed like it was drained of it's fluid.

The top of the mirror (about 4.5 cm across by 1 cm in depth) is now missing whatever fluid that causes the autodimming function to work. It looks like a huge oily smudge. I talked to the service manager and he said "Well, those mirrors run about $300-$400, I'll try to get you a deal on one" I was rather peeved by that statement because when I gave them the car the mirror was perfect. How can a mirror loose it's "fluid" while going for repairs for somethng else? I can't believe he wants me to pay for a new one.

You are lucky that you caught this problem when you did. Several owners have had the fluid leak out, drip on the consol and ruin it's finish. If anyone notices any streaking or blotchy patches in their autodimming mirrors, I reccommend that you remove it before it leaks fluid and causes any damage to your interior.

I know of no way to fix the mirror as there is no replacement glass available for them. No other autodimming mirrors will mount to the original BMW windshield lug. There is a work around. I made a web page that shows which autodimming or compass mirrors will adapt to the Z3 series. www.z3mirrors.com/ec.htm

Almost the same thing happened to me....the coupe went in for transmission problems, and when I went to pick up, I noticed the mirror oil all over the console and the recirculating light was broken. The service manager tried to get out of taking responsibility for the mirror, but it was pretty obvious the technician had caused the damage (my guess is that when removing the shifter knob, he slammed into the mirror). Good luck.

That must have hurt the Tech!
Sorry, I'm only laughing at what might have happened to the Tech, and not what happened to your car.

Z3Mirrors, that's a nice web page with good info! Thanks. I'm hoping that I can get somewhere with my local dealership. It seems like they know what they can get away with and what they can't. It's pretty frustrating.

yeah, the tech wasn't the brightest of the bunch...after slamming the mirror, I suspect he dropped the knob (which then broke the recirculating air button), then banged his head getting out of the coupe, which resulted in temporary amnesia and explains why I witnessed him looking for the coupe's fuse box in the trunk ....I don't think he's a BMW tech anymore, otherwise I would send him a link to Ron's hand-over-hand technique to prevent further bodily injury

But back to the original post - don't let them get away with it....do an inspection of all the tech's knucles and cranium for signs of the offending body part that busted your mirror!
