 2005 BMW 320i Canadian Spec.....

Hi all!! Im a newbie here and are glad to have find this forum,i know there are quite a bit of bimmer owners here.I want to get as much info on the 2005 model 320i.I have not heard nor read anything about them except that the 320i i hear/read that are only made for Canadian Spec.Althoug the European/Australian has the diesel but with a bit lower hp.It is the same spec used in the 325i from the US.Is this true?? Mine has the DOHC I-6 24V. I believe the 2006 model is now called the 323i which only has about 7 more HP than the last years. The steptronic on mine is smooth and reaction time is excellent. What are your views on this model. What are the ups and down?? I've yet to hook up and meet with other 320 owners.I've read the history of the BMW, and suffice to say that it's got some well deserve accolade and high regarded reputation.
Thanks for the input and help you well vrsed folks can offer/give me.I'm just excited as much as the next guy here.

Peace!!!!

The 320i was a Canada only model introduced because of its price point and has good value.

It has a 2.3 liter I6 as opposed to the 2.5 liter I6 used in both the Canadian and US 325's.

The standard equipment on the 320i is below that of the 325 in US and Canada (for example, steel wheels are standard on a 320, alloys wheels are standard on a 325). If you start adding equipment and options on a 320, you quickly reach the price of a 325.

The 323 has been introduced in the E90 series in Canada. It too is intended to be a lower cost vehicle to provide an alternative for those that want a less expensive 3 series. The engine is a new 2.5 liter engine with 174 hp. The 325 has the new 3 liter.

No. The E46 320i was for all markets. Except you-know-where

Yup. The 320i was a 2.2; the new E90 323i, like the E36 and E46 323i, is a detuned 2.5 (except Thailand, where it was a 2.4). It has a few more hp, and plenty more torque (about 15% more). I suppose you could call it an equivalent, since it is now the entry-level six-pot 3er.

The E46 320i was well-known for its very smooth, short-stroke (72mm vs 80mm) six but fuel economy was poor - very similar to the 325i and 330i - and with running costs the same as the 325/330, it tends to depreciate more heavily. In automatic guise for European markets it has a 3.38:1 rear end, and as such is best avoided in favour of a manual - the taller gearing with the rangey auto gearbox does not work so well with this engine.

And the E90/91 320i is a 1995cc, 4-cylinder, 200Nm, 150hp engine - correct?

Spot on. It's a long-stroke motor with the same power and - as you'd expect - a bit more torque than the 1990-2000 M50/2 two-litre six, which did service in cars such as a Z3, 520i Touring, and all manner of 3ers in between. It doesn't have the exhaust note, of course, but it's practically as smooth and has 20-25% better economy.

Thank, Andy. Those specs were the only thing that I could find from bmw.fi, but I wasn't sure since they have made some mistakes in the past.

I actually hope to drive a 320i for the heck of it. A buddy of mine in Copenhagen (new to BMW) just bought an E90, and loves it. But due to car taxes in Denmark, I believe he paid around 52000 EUR for his near base model car. Ouch.
