yikes, got the tax bill for the z4

$565.34

This got me thinking...why are we doubled (and more) taxed on items such as vehicles?

I mean, I paid 6% sales tax, registration/license fees etc @ the time I bought the car new in '04. Now just over one year later, I get a very large bill.

I know many countries in europe base there yearly tax off of engine size. What is it based off of in the US? I would assume it's a percentage of the cars value. But then what percent, and whom derives the value?

This bill of course arrived one week before the car insurance bill of $585 for the next 6 months.

It sure just isn't the cost of buying & maintaing the car...more expensive car = more expensive everything...bleh

Your state decides if and how much they'll charge.

That's your local property taxes at work to pay for schools etc.

Everyone yaks about federal taxes, but the local taxes your town impinges upon you can be stifling - boats, cars, your house etc.

You can always move to a "cheaper" district where the "mill rate" (tax rate upon each dollar) is lower, ironically, this can often mean the wealthier towns.

Amen brother. My personal property tax went to $1300 from $700 because I bought a new 330ci. (I have the same pothole up the street that I've had for 5 years though) Oh yeah, I couldn't get the sales tax rebate because I didn't sell my old car in 6 weeks...the new one was on a boat coming from Germany due to european delivery.

Is that an ad valorem (property) tax or your registration fee? I remember when a new 280SL Mercedes was $8,000 (1971). And when I bought my CL55 the sales taxes on it were more than that!
