hey all i recently left my head lights on by accident.
The battery died and so i called over my friends to recharge it. but they accidentally put the negitive to the postive and the postitive to the negitive.
If u guys ever look at ur car battery in the trunk of ur 2006 3 series the colors are opposite. The red is positive and the black is negitive..
well yeah so it sorta sparked and scared the hell out of me...and so we corrected the cables. We got my 330 started and it works fine
but umm im kinda scared that i may have ruined the alternator or battery life or what ever.. what do u all think? im not much of a mechanic so i dont know jack. Is this even something to be worried about?

From what i know... red has been positive. and black has always been ground (negative) for all cars......................
as long as ur car wasn't running..it shouldn't have really done anything to ur car... granted.. i don't recommend doing it.. but what u did was suppy power to ur ground on the battery.. and put another passage for ground for ur Power (red) cable from the battery.. u just made a two separate circuits.... the power from the charger was going straight to ground in ur battery.. and the power from the car to the charger negative wouldn't have done anything since ur car was not running... the spark was probably from surface discharge from ur battery.. or the simple fact that u put a lot of current from the charger to ur ground...

Every car I have owned the red has been positive and black has been ground.
Be careful and read the manual before starting any car... you risked personal injury! Sparks could ignite the hydrogen gas produced by the battery and cause an explosion and in a worse case blind you.
And hooking the battery up in a series circuit could damage the entire electrical system, including the starter.

UHHMMM...that's called an Industry Standard! I can't think of ANY car that is different than that.

Yup, Red positive, Black negative. Even the brits follow this, though they like to be different just for bloody mindedness!

I have NEVER seen any car with red as negative and black as positive...
Plus, you might want to read the manual the next time. There are the terminals (with red marked as positive) under the hood for jumping the car.
