My brother is looking at an S52 roadster with 100K miles on it. He is wondering how many miles can one reasonably expect to get out of the S52 engine with good maintenance? No track use expected. However, it will be used as a daily driver.

My 2000 M Roadster just turned 99,000 miles. I'm expecting to get another 150,000 - 200,000. The reason for the expectation: we just pulled the head on a 1988 535is with 298,000 miles on it and the cylinders still had cross hatching in the bores. If they were making motors 17 years ago that would do this, I don't see any reason why that wouldn't continue. Yes, I know the S54 motors have had their problems. BUT, the S52 is relatively bullet proof, so I feel somewhat justified in my confidence.
Change the oil frequently (3-5,000 mile intervals), do all of the other recommended maintenance (hoses, coolant changes etc) and you should get another 150-200K miles.

My firend sold his brother his 95 (June 94 delivery) E36 M3 with 137,000 on it, and he did all teh scheduled maintenace, but NOTHING other than what broke or was scheduled. It was still running strong when I last got to drive it.
