 Wax after total polish treatment

I finally made a point of it and will have my whole car detailed this weekend. It will be polished, all scratches removed etc. Afterwards, it will be waxed with one of the following products:
Meguairs NXT techwax (dark, rich shine.) or S100 carnauba wax applied by PC.

Then, about every month or every other month I want to wax it myself. I was thinking about a polymer wax (because they last longer). I have been reading a lot about wax but there's just so much info to sort out... So, 2 simple questions:

1) What wax is your favourite/easy to use (by hand, no machine)
2) Do you have to strip the remaining wax every time you re-wax the car or do you simply have to wash the car?

Thx so much for any info! I'm trying to get some simple answers...

This has been beat to death and everybody has a favorite product. I`m reasonably sure
that there are no BAD products. But here goes my .02

1. Meguiars #26
2. No, just wash with plain water

Meguiar's NXT is easy to apply by hand (more accurately, remove by hand, since that's the hard part ). I'd stick with that, it works well and it's readily available in local stores. In my experience, all polymer waxes are easier to buff than a wax with a lot of carnauba. Of course it's always harder if you apply too much, regardless of product. Part of the reason I use a random orbital; easy to lay down a thin, even coat. Also easy to remove it with a microfiber wax removal bonnet on the random orbital.

Stripping wax... that'll happen of its own accord. In general you don't want to wax without claying first, unless you like dealing with microscratches. Clay will remove wax, but it's unusual to have to clay the entire body unless you drive through asphalt construction every day. After washing, run your fingers over the body (using detailing spray as lube) to find sticky/rough spots that need claying. Clay them using the detailing spray, then rinse and dry. Then you can wax, or polish first if needed.

Don't skip the clay, it's an important step to avoiding microscratches. It doesn't take much time, and it's well worth the effort. I normally only have to clay a dozen spots or so, takes maybe 10 minutes to finish. If you don't do it, you're begging to pick up something nasty with the wax pad and proceed to scratch the clearcoat with whateever you picked up. And then you'll have to strip and polish. This is one of those "do a little work to avoid a lot of work" things.

Thx for the great explanation! So, the detailing spray is a different product?

Different than wax? Yes. Very thin, essentially used as a lubricant, comes in a spray bottle. I use Griot's Speed Shine (bought by the gallon for refills of the sprayer), but they all work equally well and mostly differ only in scent. Those marketers know what they're doing; Zymol has some interesting flavors to their products, as do others (Randy likes the Mother's cinnamon-scented stuff).

Meguiar's sells a clay and detailing spray kit, you should have no trouble finding it locally. One bar of clay, one bottle of their detailing spray.
