My 98 M has just over 50k miles, and not knowing if the transmission and diff fluids have ever been changed, I changed both to Red-line fluids. But I noticed that the old fluids looks like they could have come right from the bottle. Both were yellow and clear. I've had the car for just about two years and I've never changed the fluids.
The oem transmission fluid is suppose to be life-time, but that just doesn's seem right. But seeing the fluid after 50k miles, I'm wondering if it isn't true? Any comments?

Basically they are lifetime. The fluids are good for the life of the tranny, which is reduced if you don't change the fluids.

I don't believe it unless it says the owner's life time. As mentioned it could be the lifetime of the tranny, or the lifetime of the oil. However, since I didn't by that $120 bottle of the stuff, I can't read what the fine print to see what it may say.

I see no reason to not change fluids every so often. It is cheap insurance.
Running Mobil 1, with reasonable change intervals, everywhere in our 90 Jeep Cherokee, the tranny, transfer case, and both diffs are running fine at about 350K. And that tranny is NOT known for long life. Engine made it to 300K before it was changed out for a factory reman, but only due to rear main seal leakage. Compression and such was fine.

I went to a reputable shop to have my diff & tranny oils changed (@35K), and the tech was telling me the lifetime thing was a crock. BMW changed from every 30K to lifetime at the same time when they started offering free maintenence on new cars (how convenient). Trying to save money...
He suggested changing them every 30-35K.
