Help!! New BMW owner! (97' Z3 1.9L) My car all of a sudden is NOT running right!

Hi-

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just bought my wife a 1997 BMW Z3 1.9L 4 cyl. 5 spd. It is the first BMW we have owned and we have only had it a little over a week. I bought it from a guy several states away (we drove it home 6 hrs with no problems) so its not under warranty or anything. Car has been great (for the last week with no problems) and she loves it..... until last night all of a sudden the check engine light came on and the car immediately had almost no power. I can't get it over 30 mph at all and mostly it stays under 20 even with the pedal floored in 1st and 2cnd gear. In neutral even with the pedal floored the rpms don't get over 2 and then it starts fluctuating between 1K and 2K. It wants to stall out and die and the rpms are pretty rough- if I don't keep the rpms reved at a stop sign it will konk out. If I am on even a slight incline I can't get it rolling in 1st it will just cut out. I took it to Advanced Auto and they did a diagnotsic for me which reads like this:

DTC (Codes)
P1423
Auxiliary emission
Controls

Thanks

You might be able to get some information concerning the fault codes at Shawn Fogg's web site.

I'm just guessing but it could possibly be something like a bad fuel pump or plugged fuel filter, cam position sensor or throttle position sensor, or maybe a plugged catalytic converter. Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable on this board will know exactly what is causing your problems.

It could be a dirty air sensor or an ignition problem as well. If the car has a K&N air filter, the extra oil on the filter can get the mass air sensor dirty to the point where it can no longer give a good reading.

I looked the code up in the Bentley manual for you. Bentley says the P1423 is the secondary air system (bank 1). The secondary air system runs only for the first 90 sec. or so when you start the car with a cold engine (to reduce emissions). I don't see this by itself causing your performance problems -- especially if the engine is at operating temperature -- but it might have caused the DME to go into "limp home" mode.

You can try this: Make sure the engine is cold. Make sure all sources of interior noise are off (e.g., radio, cabin ventilation fan). Start the engine, let it run for a few seconds (5 or 10 will do), then shut it off (turn the key only to the accessory position, not all the way off). You should hear the secondary air pump motor continue to run after you shut the engine off.

If the pump runs, the code may be a lie. Consider having the codes reset. If the engine runs right again and the code doesn't come back within a couple of cold starts, then let it be until/unless it does come back.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Could it be the gas filler cap?
