The light came on yesterday on my 01 Z3 3.0L, and of course the warranty expired last month. Possible causes?

Could be very simple "oil level ". check all your fluids. Try removing /disconnecting the battery and for 5 minutes. The computer should reset its self if its a simple code. If there is still a light better go get it check out by someone with a code reader. Also check the gages while the car is running. Another Cause is a vented Gas CAP... make sure it seals! Air sensors should be change aprox 80k miles. Check air filter
You should post the OD reading.
If all else fails bring a bag of money to the BMW dealer they will be happy to take it from you.
Sorry I cant help.

KC,
Pep Boys will usually read the code out for you. Also Chris Ricker has a reset tool - we do too but he's a lot closer to you.
Hope it's something minor.

I'm not sure how long you had the car but the light comes on fairly fast when the gas cap is not all the way tightened. I had it in the beginning and couldn't believe it! It was only a very small click away from being closed but it got detected and the light came on... The check engine light generally refers to an incorrect emission level...
It may sound like a dumb answer but it happens...
