I can only speak for the problem I had.I too had same problem after buying my car.went to replace rear tires when on lift found front had excessive wear also on insides.Anyways one 4 wheel alignment and 4 Kuhmos and $870.00 later the problem was solved.I have closely monitored tires after the alignment and they have been fine.what I am saying is check all 4 better safe than sorry

The Z3 cars come with a lot of negative camber in the rear. If the car's been lowered, it will aggravate inside tire wear, but in stock form they'll wear on the inside if most of the miles are plodding down the highway (driving in a straight line).

There are no alignment adjustments in the rear in stock form. It wouldn't hurt to get the numbers, but changing the rear alignment means adding toe and camber adjustability. I recommend the Ireland Engineering toe and camber kits if you want to go that route. That's what's on my car and several others. Some welding required, but that part is easy compared to getting the rear subframe out and back in.

My rear tires also have some more wear on the inside. I guess it is normal, especially if you put on wider tires than stock?? Mine are 245 in the back. And most wear is on the driver's side; probably because I usually don't carry a passenger?

You can see the inside wear in the pic I posted on the '98 Z3 wheel question' thread.

If the wear is excessive, then you might indeed need some realignment...
