The only thing you'll really be out of is the Friday and Saturday night dinners and the Sunday lunch; and you may possibly be able to procur tickets for them (person registers for two and comes alone).
The driving events fill up pretty fast, I think only 270 of the 500 registrants can get driving events, so not everybody does that anyway.
You can still line up for the panoramic photo (assuming you get there early enough__we missed it last year). All the vendors will be open to anyone on Friday/Saturday at the plant.
And the hotel parking lot is where all the really technical talk goes on

Actually, AFAIK nobody has ever registered then not made it. They have cancellations, and they do actually allow more than 500 cars. Last year, final registered was something like 540.

I've never heard of anybody on the waiting list that didn't get in. As Pinecone said, they do allow > 500 cars. BMW doesn't want to turn any of their customers away.

Just go and have fun. For the last 2 years, they have actually had a table in the Zentrum (outside the BMW store) for walk-up registrations.
Go figure.
I've been on the waiting list twice, and usually get a "come on down" email sometime in August.
At any rate, there's very little you'll miss out on anyway. Just "come on down/up!"
