 60-90 3rd gear acceleration in S54 Coupe

I remember a Road and Track article from about a year ago where they compared the BMW M5, Audi RS6, Jaguar S-Type R and the new MB E55. They had a chart where they showed the 3rd gear, 60-90 mph acceleration of each of the cars. From memory, I believe that the E55 (fastest) had a time of 4.4 seconds and the Jaguar (slowest) had a time of 5.2 seconds. They also showed an Acura RSX Type S for comparison, and its time was in the mid 7's.

I was heading back to LA from Las Vegas this weekend, and used the I-15 onramp at Baker to see how the M Coupe fared. One run (traffic was not great on the way home) with a full tank of gas yielded a time of 5.01 seconds as measured by my Timex Ironman watch. I think that ten run average could probably be done with a time between 4.9 and 5.0 seconds.

If you happen to have the time, the road and the inclination, post the time that you're able to get. R&T started the watch when the needle moved from 60, not when the gas was mashed.

yeah, I would say a good measurement system is going from about 50 and turning on the clock at 60 then off at 90. The only problem is getting the human factor out. There would need to be some datalogging device hooked into the car to get the human error out of it.

Ron did this same test with a computer hooked up to the OBC. I think he did better than you did.

I'll search for them, but do you happen to remember his numbers? Mine was in no way meant to be scientific, it was just my own curiosity to see whether or not the "wimpy" 315 hp engine of the S54 Coupe could compare with those huge, 400+ hp engines attached to those huge cars.

This thread doesn't indicate that he actually did anything other than a stopwatch measurement. He says that he WANTED to do something more scientific, but the results are not there. Oh, and it was also about 95 degrees when I did my run, plus I don't have that nice 3.46.
