 99 M Roadster Blowing Fuses ????

I have a beautiful '99 M Roadster that just clicked over 62,000 Miles. I had problems getting the power top to work ( pushing the button, nothing happening ), but once I discovered the Microswith in the folding part of the top it worked fine. A couple days after this, My interior lights wouldn't work. Then I noticed the Tail Light was out as well as my clock in the console was not working. I also discovered the power locks didn't work either. I switched out the appropriate Fuses that had blown and everything worked fine until I drove it down the road again and the door locks and clock went out. Having everything else working ( including the top ) I decided to deal with it later. This all happened during a 500 mile road trip. I get back home and things seem to be working okay but of course still no door locks or clock. I fill up with gas, and the fuel gage showed full then flopped to empty ( it had done this before after filling up ) and then back to full again a couple times. This usually stopped after driving 30 or 40 miles. Then my fuel gauge stopped working altogether as well as my two temperature gauges ( they are next to the tach and next to the battery gauge ). I went home and fixed all the fuses and started the car, it all worked fine. I turned it off, went inside, came back out and turned the car back on. The fuses for the gauges blew again. I checked everything and it is what I believe to be Number 46 and number 7 that keep blowing. The Top wont' work at all now although the fuses for it are in working order. Does anyone know what the devil is going on with my car ? Sorry for the Length of the post, I am just trying to get as much information as I can before deciding to tackle this myself or let the dealership handle it. Thank you for any information ! --- Salt Lake M Driver

If you pop fuse 7, you indeed won't have working doro lock motors.

If you pop fuse 46, you lose instrument cluster stuff and the brake light switch. If you lose the brake light switch, your power top won't work.

I don't think these circuits are related in any way, not from a quick look through the ETM. I'm guessing 2 independent problems. For fuse 46, the brake light switch area would be a good place to start. For fuse 7... I think the trunk lock motor would be the easiest to unplug to see if that stops the fuse from blowing. Murphy's Law would say that won't be it, but we'll cross our fingers for you.

You should also check the light in the trunk-known for shorting out where it bridges the gap for body to trunk lid, and it's wired with the brake lights.

The trunk light isn't in the lid, it's in the ragtop compartment panel. The common shorting for that light is the tabs against the ragtop compartment sheet metal. Particularly if you've ever left your trunk open for long periods of time; the bulb gets hot, which deforms the plastic lens, which makes the light start falling out. I got tired of this game and replaced my bulb with an LED-loaded festoon which doesn't get hot. Still risky to pop that light out without pulling the fuse first. The tabs are not well-protected, it's easy to short them on the ragtop compartment panel on the way out. Very obvious once you pop that light out (and pop the fuse while doing it ).

It's not on the same fuse as the brake lights, it's on fuse 33. That fues does have left parking light relay though, as well as the cabin light.

Daniel -- Thanks. You may have just solve a lingering problem on my car (random alarm trips on the trunk zone). I will inspect behind that light because, as I recall, ground is switched on that circuit.

What did you use for the LED setup to replace the stock bulb?
