I'm about to buy an M Coupe

Well I found a dream car and have a few questions:

It's a 2001 M coupe with only 8,000 orig. miles by the orig. owner.

The only thing that has been done to the car is oil changes and a new battery. It still boasts the original tires and is alway stored indoors.

I've only ever owned Porsches as my 3rd toy car and this will be my first BMW. (I've never even driven one of these things although I've driven a Z3). Anyway on Porshes it is worth every penny, every time to do a PPI. I don't see much PPI talk on this forum, so I'm not sure what protocal is.

The car is 10 hours away. Is it worth the money to do a PPI on such a low mile car?

What would you look for (other than cosmetics)? I doubt tranny and subrame issues will be a problem at this mileage. The owner (whos one of those picky Porsche guys) says the tires are not hard and not flat spotted.

Please give me your input.

Thanks.

There were a batch of 2001 S54 engines with faulty bearings (premature wear). Best way to tell is send a sample of the oil out to a lab such as Blackstone for analysis. Of course, with only 8000 miles, it may not tell you much anyway. Others on this list know more about the bearing issue and may be able to offer more specifics.

Just curious: how much is the asking price? I'm always curious as to what they are selling for since I hope to locate one in the future.

Good luck!

Asking Price

Not sure I should let that out. I've been hounding this guy since last October to sell this car.

Curious what you all think the going rate is??? There are six on Autotrader for sale, all with low mileage (under 35K). The lowest priced one is 35.9K and that is for the car with 35K miles on it.

From what I've seen in my window shopping (I'm always prepared for when the right one comes along!), the 2002 goes for more than the 2001 (duh) which may have more to do with the bearing concerns than just being one year newer. In general, prices on S54 coupes seem to be between $30K to $36K depending on model year and mileage. The one you are looking at with only 8K miles will probably be more to the higher end of that range I would think, but probably not fetch as much as a 2002 with the same miles. I've heard of a few outlier deals (someone finding an 01 Coupe for less than $30K or someone buying a museum piece 2002 coupe with ultra low miles for $38K) but the sweet spot of the range of asking prices currently seems to be $32K - $34K.

Just my two cents based on observations. Your mileage may vary. Good luck with it!

Some other tidbits on the car:

NO SUNROOF!
Estriol Blue over full black (not the black and blue) interior
I know the car was delivered in August 2001. The guy had to wait 6mos for it so hopefully it is after the production date of the problemed cars. either way the 100K warranty they put on it would cover the problems I think????

Dude, they were all produced in the same 6 month period. Does it really matter if it was an 01 or 02 as far as the bearing problem?

M3s had bearing problems well into 2003.
