I assume this was an E46 M3? I think it's pretty nice too. Certainly _much_ better than having a torque converter. Works pretty well at HPDE's, I like the downshifts.

The question is, can the SMG run without the DME.
And how much room do the hydrolics take up. Snap some pix of a SMG tranny next time they have one up on the lift!

Interesting but not that impressive to me when I drove it in '02 and again last summer. I am fortunate enough to have had a 355 F1 and had expected based on the various claims of the SMG, for it to be better than the Ferrari F1 box. The '02 didn't do it at all and drove me away from buying an M3. I was told that it was mcuh improved in the latest generation which I gave another shot last year and was still not blown away although it was much better. I even brought the wife along as she is a good car critic and came away with the same impression. The biggest complaint was that it couldn't drop a sequence of gears that quckly, say 4th down to 2nd. If you did this with the F1 box under full throttle, it was like someone smacking the back of the seat with a 2X4 and it wasn't power related as the S54 is a pretty evenly matched motor.
Anyway, my guess is that the got it right in the new 7 speed SMG and can't wait to drive the M5. Now I wonder if THAT box will fit in an M Coupe...I doubt it!
But I bet an M5 will fit in the garage!

Why would you ever want to drop 2 gears while at full throttle?....
