Have been thinking Gel type but can't find supplier who has one for a 98 Z3 2.8
Any help is always appreciated.

Carl,

I have had an Optima (gel) orange top in my coupe for about 4 years. Initially it was really good at holding a charge during extended periods of inactivity, but lately it has been not been doing so well and has gone flat on me a couple of times.

I have heard that Optima has fallen on hard times financially so I might be hesitant to buy another one. They are expensive and have a good pro-rated warranty, but that doesn't do you any good if the company is not solvent. Probably will go with an Interstate next time around.

If you are in a hurry or a pinch, the Sears Die Hard International is a direct drop in replacement, however you need to ask for an extra vent kit. The Interstate distributor in my area did not have a 91 in stock when I called. .

I've purchased batteries for two Zs from Batteries Plus and have had no problems. The Z batteries are made by the same factory that makes the oem BMW batteries and they are exactly the same except for the label. Cost about $80.

I just replaced the batteries in both the Coupe and the Roadster. Interstate MTP-91, as recommended by this board. Interstate has now pushed the warranty out to almost 8 years (crazy). Added bonus.. the MTP-91 saves 9 pounds of weight over the stock BMW battery.

Foot print is the same, but the height is 3/4" shorter. I posted some DIY fix info on fitting one to a non-M. It's the last post in the permanent DIY sticky at the top of this board.

I found out that Optima was not making a drop in unit. Must be the vents & hoses.
Went with Lead acid bat that was made foe the Z roadster.
What I found interesting in all this is that as the battery degridated it made the Altenator work harder which resulted in stator chatter fvrom the altenator. I thought that a bearing in alternator was going but now with new battery the altenator is not working constantly to charge so chatter has gone away... Peace has returned to the Z ride
