Help Please - Broken Shock Tower Stud

Hi All,

Well, I decided to check the nuts on top of the shock towers as I installed a StrongStrut about 3 months ago. Kinda forgot how to use my torque wrench and snapped off one of the studs.

I obviously know I need to get this repaired, so was hoping to get some questions answered. I appreciate any help whatsoever!

Is it dangerous to drive now (2 out of 3 ain't bad?). My mechanic is about 60 miles away and needed to go a little driving tomorrow. Or should I be very careful and find a more local mechanic?

Is there anything I can do, or special bolt to buy that will go around the broken stud somehow in the meantime?

What will need to be done to fix this? Will they just replace the stud or do I need a whole new mount?

And lastly, (and most importantly!) any good upgrade mods or maintanence I should get done concerning the mount/shock towers?

Thanks so much!

Barry

This has happened to me too. Now I ALWAYS remember that thise studs are to be torqued to only 18ft/lbs. It is probably safe to drive short distances, but I fixed mine in the garage. The entire front strut assembly needs to come out. Undo the top nuts, the caliper bolts, the control arm bolt etc... and drop the assembly out. You will need some sort of press to push out the broken stud, and a press to push in a new one. I was lucky, I had a strut assembly in storage from another BMW and the stud was the same. If you don't have such laying around, get one from a wrecking yard or the dealer ( I don't know if they sell it separately ) Re-assemble everything and then have the front end re-aligned.

If you are lucky you won't need to remove the strut and spring, in which case you will need a few extra tools.

Good luck.

Check out item 13.

If it was me, I'd knock the broken one out with a punch (without removing the strut from the car) and try to drive the new one back up in its place using a drift from the bottom. That said, some of them are easier to access than others.

Well, that sounds much easier. Good luck, I hope that works for you.

I'd do like Randy said, drive the old one out with the strut still on the car. I'd probably take the strut out to put the new one in though. Not very difficult, leave the strut assembled.

Dealer can get new studs for you quickly, and they're cheap. For a temporary fix, just drive the old one out and use a grade 8 bolt and nut. M8 or 5/16"-18 size should work.

You can get them at the dealer. Like 50 cents.

Tightening the nut up will also pull it into position.
