 What a gas!

Here we go again. I just filled the tank of my 1996 Z3 at a clean, newer-pumps Exxon Station (not my regular station, unfortunately, I was on a trip) and guess what? Now, my gas gauge doesn't work. I have read, in BIMMER magazine, that such problems are caused by "additives." The last time I had this problem, it gradually went away after a couple of weeks. But, what a drag, having to look at one's mileage to know when to refuel. I can't believe BMW has not come out with some retro-fit to the gas tank sending units to avoid this problem. Anyone else have this problem?

Go to Esmerelda's Fixit Page and look under "Fuel Gauge Dancing" for some information. I had the sending unit replaced under CPO warranty on my 97 Z3 which fixed the problem. Some have suggested to only fill your tank until the nozzle automatically clicks off, which I do, but others have disputed that this makes a difference. I haven't had this problem with my MZ3.
