 Z3 Radio - OUCH!

Really disappointed in the factory radio. Anyone have experience with custom installations? This thing needs more boom, particularly with top down.

There are any number of car stereo shops that will be glad to make your Bimmer loud enough to actually HURT people in other cars.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM mine is plenty loud for me,then again you probably want one of those systems tht rattle house windows and annoys other people at traffic lights. Any local stereo shop or even circuit city can help you get decibal fines and ruin your hearing. besides most of the time I just like the wind and the sound of going through the gears and the curves of an ocean side road////// IVE GOT YOUR ANSWER CALL MTV, YOU KNOW PIMP MY RIDE, THEY CAN HELP!

There's lots of information available on this and other Z forums, Z3 websites etc. Try these for example:

I replaced the sub and sub amp with an option called "Sunfire" which was designed for the Z3 by Bob Carver. The amp is 400watts and the sub is a 4" sub with a passive radiator. Don't let the size fool you, it has quite a bit of thump and fits in the factory location (I'll send the manual to you if you want it). It is expensive and it is getting tougher to find, but might be a place to start. (PN 82 11 0 027 937 fits Z3 Roadsters with Harmon-Kardon stereo from 8/99 on).

I replaced all of the factory speakers with MB Quart component speakers. Of course with component speakers you need to find a place for the crossovers. I made a board to mount these on for the trunk. I replaced the factory amp with a 4 channel JLAudio amp and I have an additional crossover to send the low signal from the rear speakers to the sub.

I wanted to keep the stock look, so I'm using the factory mounts & grilles for the speakers. I kept the factory head unit (but I'm not sure about this). I am using line levelers for the head unit outputs.

I am working on adding an iPod adapter and Sirius to this. Maybe if I finish this, I'll do a complete write up with pics....

Bottom line, I can hear it at 100mph with the top down, but I have plenty of time and $$$ invested.
