Warranty Help
I am looking for some insight in regards to Bmw warranty on engines. I have '99 528 which I bought CPO. The CPO warranty expired in June and my car's engine blew up two days ago. The dealer is telling me the car it would cost $12K to fix the engine and the car without the fix is only worth 2K. Retail of the car is only $15K and I have $10K left on the loan. In short, I am looking at a $8K hit on the car. I am looking for any insight on who to talk to at BMW corporate to discuss this. I find it hard to believe a BMW with on 80K miles on it would blow an engine just a couple of months after the warranty expired. This is the ultimate driving machine right?? The dealer is basically giving me a tough luck story. Any advice on who to contact, courses of action, or strategies to deal with this would be most appreciated.

They must be infuriating, to say the least. But could you please tell us what happened to the engine, if you know. "Blowing up" doesn't give us enough detail to help you (assuming we can).

Have they offered any explanation?
This is probably not the answer that you're going to be looking for, but from my experience BMWNA will usually help out with some goodwill assistance on cars that are out of the 4/50 warranty (usually a portion of the cost, varying based on how far out of warranty you are), but I've seen BMWNA very reluctant to do goodwill on a car that has gone out of the 6/100 CPO coverage. Basically, BMW has covered that car for 6 years or 100,000 miles already, so they're not in a position to really want to cover it any longer.

You find it hard to imagine that something bad would happen after a Warranty expired? Come on, you own a big boy/big girl car. That's why if you can't personally insure the risk (with your wallet) you'd better have a policy of some sort that covers it. "Can't believe my house would burn down a month after my home insurance policy lapsed". Maybe my old insurer (who I no longer make payments to) will help pay to rebuild my house? Don't expect anyone to feel sorry that your self-assessed outstanding clairvoyant capabilities failed you. Carnak says.........you're probably screwed. You made a decision to run the risk on something that had, regardless of the probabilities, some very bad downsides. Bottom line, you fu'd and need to bite the bullet. Suck it up, put it into your learning factor, and move on. Unless you're looking for someone to host your pity party as well?

| | Reply » Warranty Help | Thanks for the reply. In short, the engine overheated and heat generateted ended up causing the anti-freezer mixing with the oil, gaskets melted, and the car now leaks oil. BWM service told me the engine needs to be replaced. I am 5 months out of warranty calendar wise but 20K under the 100K miles you quoted.
