Brake Change
Hey, I was wondering if anyone here has changed their own brakes on a Z3. I have done a brake change on many other cars and was wondering if there is any major difference with the brakes of a Z3. I was quoted 500 to have them changed at the dealership so i decided to go pay 50 for the brakes and do it myself. Please let me know | | Reply » Brake Change | look for threads with brakes mentioned in them & get the blue book... These cars are not that exotic that only a dealer or a german rocket scientist can work on them.. Yes dealers think BMW owners should all be surgeons, dentist, lawyer ( only rich ones) or married to the above or should I say they charge that way... BMW Bring Money Withyou... IMHO By the way welcome to bimmerfest read alot of post before you jump in and stub your toes... You can learn a lot about your car & how to enjoy it better....

Have fun, our brakes are a piece of cake.
| | Reply » Brake Change | As David mentioned, it's very easy. The only potential trouble is if you're changing the front rotors; they might take some effort to get off (seized to the hub). If you're replacing the rotors, put some anti-seize on the new ones where they touch the hub to make it easier the next time. Kopr-Shield or similar will work fine.
The other thing is the pad wear sensors. It seems like every time I take my passenger side rear sensor out, part of it crumbles off. Odd since you'd think the front one would be the one to get the most heat abuse. Annoying if you've had your rear rotors off as often as I have. I'm out of spares, and last week had my rotors on and off again. At Randy's last night we found that sensor just hanging because I had put it back in last week, knowing part of it had crumbled off. I thought it'd stay put, it seemed reasonably secure. I'm giving up on that one, and just going to tie it up. I don't need pad wear sensors anyway.

| | Reply » Brake Change | Let's see, sometimes I feel I have done the brakes on various 3 based cars about every day. IN fact there have been times I HAVE done them more that once a day.
Only caveat is to use a torque wrench on eh caliper guide bolts, and make SURE you use the proper units. Many BMW torques are speced in Newton-Meters, and setting your pounds-feet torque wrench to these same numbers will just about guarantee twisting off a guide pin.
Oh, and the DIY guides will give you the tricks of dealing with spring clip. Not hard, but can be frustrating the first couple of times.
