I have heard this sound only once before.. Yesterday I heard it again.
I was accelerating from a stop and turning right and I heard a loud, scary CLUNK sound from the right rear. It sounded like someone hit the side of the right rear fender with a mallet.
Any ideas? Is this a tell-tale subframe bushing sound or should I be double checking I still have 4 rims or something?
Thx

Thx | Could be one of the following things: 1. Your sway bar popped off or broke the endlinks. 2. RSMs even though the sound from these things is not as severe 3. Check your diff mount and trunk floor for cracks.

I don't have a lift, but I jacked up the car and took a look underneath. I also looked in the trunk. I think the sound I heard was a spotweld pulling out or something.
I went and looked at other pics of this endemic problem and mine is not as bad as others. i.e. it's not like the differential is dragging on the ground. Nonetheless, it is a real safety issue. It's amazing that there is no recall. I guess that waits until someone dies from the defect.
I'm in Santa Monica and have not had a good experience with Santa Monica BMW. I saw a posting on 368s.com about Center BMW having worked with BMW to correct this problem. Ideally, BMW will fix the trunkfloor AND reinforce it so that this does not happen again. Anyone know who this was that had their car fixed by Center BMW?
My car is a 98 M Roadster. I am the 3rd owner and it has 55K miles. The car is bone stock. The first "owner" was a lesee, the second owner didn't seem like a racer and I have not raced the car at all.
Any suggestions or comments?
P.S. Black paint on spotwelds is POR15. I had the carpet out before I knew about this problem, noticed the exposed metal and thought I'd try and protect it. That's a few months ago and the spotwelds are further pulled out just since then.

markd89,
Welcome to an ever growing club!
Yes, it's a bummer. Yes, it can be fixed.
It will be up to your dealer (of choice) as to whether the spot welds just get tacked back up or the floor is properly fixed and reinforced.
I was able to (literally) work with my dealer to get two (2) M Rdstrs fixed to my satisfaction. One is "as stock" with a doubled up differential mount and the other has an E-36 M3 dual ear differential cover and associated mounting points.
The whole story can be pieced together (including numerous pictures) starting with this link.

I'm going to Center BMW tomorrow. The BMW regional rep is supposed to be there, so I'm hoping to get a decision on the car. Wish me luck!!
So far the experience with Center BMW service has been positive. Much more professional than Santa Monica BMW.

NathanLA got his Coupe worked on in LA -- check with him. He posts here and on the Roadfly Coupe board.
I believe that he might have used these guys: http://mz3.net/articles/207.html
