My wife brought a 98 2.8L Roadster to the marriage, and she's finally letting me mess with it. I've added a Strong-Strut tower brace and butt brace, seat bushings and a mirror adapter to take care of some of the obvious problems. Now I'd like to dive into some basic maintenance. This is my first BMW so I'm coming in pretty cold.
My question is, what all will I need for an oil change and where are good places to get the stuff?
Reset tool Filter element Oil (is Mobil1 ok and if so what weight?) Any special wrenches
I wasn't able to find this info through searching. Please point me too it if it's already out there.
Thanks. Great site!

Mobil 1 is fine. I use BMW's synthetic 5-30W from the dealer and with a discount the price is cheaper. I also use BMW filters. I'd consider getting a MityVac oil extractor and doing the change from above. Here's some additional information.

You need a 36 mm socket to take the top off the oil filter housing. Mityvac type extractor is the way to go.
The only Mobil 1 oils that meet the required ACEA A3/B3 levels are the 0W-40 and the 15W-50. Or go with the BMW 5W-30 synthetic.
Do a search, you can do the reset with a simple piece of wire. Key to position 2 and connect the proper hole in the underhood connector to ground.

Im about to do my first oil change tomorrow for my S52... I was curious about 2 of the parts that came with the filter...
I know where the large o-ring goes, but there is also a small one, where does it go? And there are two metal washers, one is the crush washer, whats the other one? Also which is which, they are similar in size (and neither is copper).
This is exactly what my filter came with:

Z3 Z3 M LUBRICATION SYSTEM - OIL FILTER (The difference is in the production dates). The little o-ring and the other washer are part numbers 6 and 7 on the bolt that goes through the center of the oil filter. Not sure which is which with respect to the washers.

| The little O-ring fits on the end of the filter cap bolt. You'll see it once you have the bolt all the way out (it's not by the cover, it's on the other end of the bolt). Sometimes a little tricky getting the old one off since it'll be slippery. Dental pick, miniature screwdriver or similar will be handy.
Both washers are crush washers; one is for the oil pan, one is for the oil filter lid as mentioned. All of the kits I've had have a copper crush washer so it's obvious, but if my memory is correct, the oil pan crush washer is a bit smaller in outside diameter (and thicker).
