I'll probably just end up getting a ticket anyway..

No one wants a front plate. For those of us in front-plate-states, there's always that dilema on whether to go without the front plate and risk the fix-it ticket. But it's actually slightly more risky than that; Could the lack of a front plate get you pulled over in the first place, where he might have let you go if you had it. Like, maybe you're speeding some, but not enough to bother with.. ahh but then.. he's thinking.. they're taunting me by running without a front plate.

Let's guess.. maybe, what.. half of all sports car owners in front plate states go for it?? It's very popular to go without. I certainly debated it for a long time. From day one, I've ground off the lip edge border of my car's plates, just to make the plate less bulbous. Took it as far as I thought I could, without a cop noticing that I'd "cut into a license plate" .. "Ahh.. what's this??!". There's no statute against it, or sentence.. "though shalt not maul state license plates".

Then I saw one of those ads in Bimmer mag for Bimmian products. They offer custom euro license plates. You give them your state license plate numbers and they make you a Euro plate. Then after that, I noticed how some of the cars in the mag had front plates from states where they put the tags (year / month stickers) up along the top row, instead of the bottom row like in my state.

Ok, that did it. I decided I'd turn my front plate into a "mini Euro plate". Went to the DMV, told them I'd accidentally damaged my tags / stickers and needed new ones. Paid $10 for a new set. Went home, and cut the bottom off of my front plate, and re-mounted the new tags along the top row. Voila.. a mini Euro style front plate...

Whaddya think? [ It's ok. I can take the heat ]

I think that there is in CT title 14. I can check.
Looks good. What are the overall width and height dimensions?
The CT plate has added lettering above and below the plate ID.
Did you use the stock NA front plate mounting?

I had it that way on my WRX, and it at leat kept them away, so there was at least something there. Although on the GTI I had a long euro plate and got two tickets. So as long as it is closer to the regular US plate, it might not draw as much attention as none.
I also notice that "nice" cars never get pulled over for that. Vettes and Porsche, Ferrari....
all seam exempt? I made my bumper look stock with the red bumper plugs so I can try the "it came that way" excuse. But I want personal plates so that probably won't work after I do that.

In CA, the law says that I need a front plate. This is the 3rd vehicle that I've owned and haven't put on a front license plate. This covers more than 18 years of driving "naked". I've never been stopped for a missing license plate.

I'm probably due....

But IMHO all cars look much better without a front license plate. I'll continue to keep my front bumper naked until Johnny Law says that I really REALLY need one.

I know, it's wrong, and I'm taking my chances, but my experience shows that LAPD has better things to worry about.

(Nomex underwear in place)

Flame away!

My main concern is that if an officer wants to pull you over, you have given him/her "probable cause" which is all that is needed. Once you are pulled over for "probable cause" anything goes.

No front plate on my car. The way it works in urban cities such as NYC, the police have more things to worry about than the tiny percentage of non-front plate drivers. However, the NY/NJ/PA Port Authority (whose jurisdiction are the tunnels and bridges) love motor vehicle infractions. So as I approach a tunnel/bridge, I throw the plate up on the dash in front of the intrument cluster. It normally resides between the passenger seat and centre console.

On rare occasions when I'm in the suburbs, the plate is up on the dash all the time. If they do give me a ticket, it's a non-moving violation anyway. Worth the price of not having the plate where it's supposed to be IMO.
