 Tapping Noise from Vanos

I have a 2002 Z3 2.5 with 47 K miles, all of a sudden it developed a tapping noise from the engine. At first I thought it was a lifter or valve adjustment, because that is what it sounded like. But this engine doesn't have valve adjustments or lifters. I used a stethescope and found it was coming from the front of the engine, intake side just above the Thermostat housing.

The likelu suspect is the Vanos system, the question is how bad is this and should it be repaired under warrenty. The tapping does no go away when the engine warms up, is very pronounced and can be heard while driving at 30 mph.

Any suggestions/assistance would be appreciated

There are several topics on the site about the VANOS system. Here is a summary:
(1) Use 15-50W oil to stop the tapping.
(2) The metallurgy of the cam-tappet-roller area is bad, causing grooves to be worn and not allowing full valve travel.

The replacement was fully covered under warranty in prior cases. I just had my VANOS replaced under CPO warranty.

Good Luck

I went to the dealer about this and they did an engine flush and put new oil and filter in. They said to drive it for a while and see what happens. Since then the tap has gotten louder.

I did some of the other threads on the forum and the install procedure at this URL

http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tech...aft-Timing.htm

Which was real good. Looking at the pictures of the front of the CAMS, Gears and Vanos system, the area I've isolated the tapping to is right in the area of the Cam Shaft Position Sensor, just above the thermostat housing.

The dealer said its an adjustment and not covered by warrenty. It doesn't look like there are any ajustments to be made. I intend to speak to the Service Manager and Shop Foreman about this and escalate the issue. It isn't normal for this engine to sound like this.

I had an 84 BMW years ago while in Germany... With that car you had to adjust the valves every so often. BMW is noted for smoking and tapping because of valve related issues in the past.

My advice, take it back to the dealer and let them FIX IT. It may cost you a little $$ but better now then later.

Good Luck

PS dont change from using the factory oil type
