H&R Springs w/ no aftermarket shocks?

I've have been told that putting on H&R Springs with no aftermarket shocks would kill my stock shocks. I have seen people with H&R Springs and stock shocks with no problems at all. My car has 57k miles and the shocks is about to be shot anyways. I am planning on just getting H&R Springs and just wait until my shocks gives up.

In terms of performance, I know that getting a full suspension will have a huge improvement in comparison with the stock suspension. With just Springs, would I still see an improvement?

One more question:
What exactly is the ground control Coil over kit at www.shox.com . It says that it comes with eibach ERS Springs, but no struts/shocks. It seems like they are just springs. How are these coil overs? and Would you recommend this over H&R Springs?

Thanks

To answer you question, no there are no real problems with installing H&Rs on stock struts. It will kill your struts faster as will any lowering spring or even cutting your stocks. It just wears them out faster as the strut will have to deal with a stronger spring.

Oh and my H&Rs dropped the rear of my car only. I've heard if you use Bilsteins this isn't a problem but I find that hard to believe.

The problem is, the shocks wear out MUCH faster, and since the front are the same work to change shocks or springs or both, why would you wnat to pay the labor TWICE in a short period of time.

And while the shocks are being killed, there is not enough dampening to control the stiffer springs. Sort of a lose, lose, lose situation.

The GC coil over kit is a set of threaded sleeves, Eiach srpings and adjustable spring seats. You still need to get shocks. Or go to GC itself and buy the entire kit, ready to install. GC allows you to order whatever spring rates you want and then separately set the ride height.

You are right to doubt, i have the Bilstein/H&R set-up and had the squat look. doubled up on rear spring perch pads to help minimize it.

I have a friend with a Z3 coupe who put H&R sport springs on a few years ago. A couple of casual observations are: It dropped his car very low in the front and rear. The extra camber wears out the inside edges of his tires fairly rapidly. He hits the bump stops on the shocks continuously. It is a very bouncy ride on anything but the best of roads.

I agree with Terry's comments about the amount of labor to install the shocks while you install the springs. Especially on the front. You have to do the same amount of work twice doing it this way. I also agree about the existing shocks having to work harder with the newer springs and may fail much quicker.

Finally, I just installed a TCKline setup on my M coupe. It lowered it about 3/4" all around. In fact, I didn't even have to adjust my lights. The "squat" effect under power is gone, it handles extremely well, and body lean has been minimalized. I could lower it further, but I wanted to preserve the ride and my tires.

After researching all of the availalble options, the TCKline setup was the one most people seemed to have the least amount of difficulty with both during installation, and afterward. That has also been my experience. I purchased the "TCKR True Match S/A Coilover System" without rear height adjusters (I used spring pads). I upgraded the rear shocks to top adjustable rebound for a few dollars more. I love it. YMMV.

BTW Bilstein Sport shocks are shorter than stock to deal with lowering springs.

Ours dropped front and rear, but less in the front. I had one spring turned too far and the end jumped to the upper level of the spring perch raising the front an extra half inch.
