 Taming the Magnaflow Monster

I had a pair of Magnaflow mufflers installed just before Bimmerfest. Had Mesa Muffler in Costa Mesa, CA do it. Well-done. There is a flanged connection (actually 2 of them) that allows me to re-install the stock mufflers without a trip to the muffler shop.
Unfortunately they were a bit too loud for my taste --- good tone, just too much of it! So I had my local guy (Central Muffler in Chino, CA) find a pair of short (9") resonators and weld them in behind the flanges I mentioned above. Now I have the same tone, the low exhaust restriction, and a dB level that shouldn't attract every cop in the county!
Yeah, I probably should have gone with Eisenmann or SuperSprint or such, but you know how we coupe owners are --- we need to be different.

I'm surprised you didn't use SpinTech

You know I really gave Spintech a thought -- a looong thought. I decided that the rectangular shape of the Spintech housings wouldn't look right under the coupe. I may change my mind later.

I just installed a set of Eisenmann Sport exhaust and its way too boomy. I love the sound but again, its just too much of it. Did the resonators help the "boom" or was it the same just quieter?

Thanks

Bob,

I also installed magnaflow mufflers on my s54 and found it to be too loud as well. Did the resonators eliminate the droning at highway speeds (60-75mph)?

Any pics?

hipendicular m: Resonators definitely reduced the 'BOOM." If you mean that sudden blast of sound you get when you give it some throttle.

druster: I have noticed almost NO drone at 65-70mph in 5th gear unless climbing a hill.
I don't have any pix of the exhaust installation, but I'll try to remember to see if I can get it up on a rack when I have my camera handy.
