Alpine head unit(s) - FM only
Wanting to be able to listen to my iPod (and MP3 discs), I replaced the OEM Business CD head unit in my 2000 Z3 with an Alpine 9851. FWIW, I have the upgraded Harmon Kardon sound system (subwoofer, 8-channel amp, etc.). Understanding the amp can handle high level inputs, I just used a harness adapter and connected to the OEM harness. The radio works fine, but I get no audio from either the CD or an iPod connected to the aux input (via an AInet cable). Thinking possibly the unit was bad, I dropped in my daughter's Alpine unit and the same result... FM works fine, but no audio from the CD or external (iPod) input. Any ideas from the experts? | | Reply » Alpine head unit(s) - FM only | Fastman,
AMPs normally need a +12 signal to turn them on as well as a +12 feed to power them. Its sounds like something got lost in the translation in your harness adapter and this +12 feed is only being sent when the radio is in use. Your harness adapter is probably connecting the BMW amp remote signal to the ISO antenna power.
On most aftermarket head units I have seen the antenna power is on for all sources, so it can double up as antenna power and amp remote. I suspect the Alpine units are being too clever here with the antenna power and only sending +12 when the radio is in use. You would probably find a power antenna would go up for radio and come down then you listen to other sources.
I don't know Alpine, but there must either be another wire that is a true amp remote turn on or a setting in the head unit to send power on all sources.
Hope this helps

I cut the power antenna lead coming out of the unit, replaced it with the the remote lead and we have tunes: FM, CD and iPod. Life is good. Now I just need to figure out how I killed the bulb that illuminates the fan switch and right half of the temperature control. Many thanks!
