Side Air Bags
Hi there, Reading TurnAround's post about his reupholstry job on his door panels has me knida thinking I wouldn't mind doing the same. Advantage for me is that I have no side air bags which might make it a bit easier. Anyways, I was wondering if on replacing the panels, I could then fit the airbags in there? Or is it strictly a factory job?
Cheers Marc

I have spare side airbags, and before I sell them, I want to know if I can fit them, even though the car is not fitted with them atm.

Not sure on Australian cars - but if it's a 2001 model, it should have the newer airbag controller and 2-stage main airbag, right? If that's the case, then you may be in luck.
On an old car like my '96, it's damned-near impossible: the doors aren't designed to accept the airbags, the controller and wiring would all have to be swapped, etc. etc.
But on your car, it may be doable -- first, see if the door itself looks like it has the mounting points for the airbags -- then look inside for the wiring. Chances are, the spare connector will be bundled and tied somewhere in there. Seems like BMW tries to use the same wiring harnesses where possible.
You'll also need to look under the carpets for the side impact sensors -- there's one on each side, located under the seats and bolted to the floor. You can pretty much recognize all the airbag stiuff by the connectors and wires. I can't remember exactly what's different, but I remember that they look different than any of the other wiring (orange connectors, maybe? yellow? something like that).
If all the wiring is there and the airbag controller is the same, you should be able to add the sensors, bags, and door panels. Not sure if the controller needs any programming or not.
Hope that helps (a little)
David
