I am about to pull the trigger on an E38 2000 740iL. The car just went out of the CPO warranty and the owner got the Inspection II done before it did. Apart from fixing the standard stuff like radiator and the front end bushings and the kidney grills. He also got new brakes.
I am in a dilemma now on whether to get a pre-purchase inspecion. Common sense suggests that I should. But if the car has just had an inspection II at a dealer with the owner spending more then $3K to fix issues, what else should I ask the pre-purchase inspector to do?
Is there a specific area I should ask them to focus on which an Inspection II would not have covered.

Well, since you are asking, I would say go ahead and have it done. There are plenty of good independent BMW mechanics around here and it will be worth spending a $100 for an hour's inspection.
You don't mention the mileage on the car but there are plenty of things that may need attention, e.g. fuel filter, spark plugs, diff oil, transmission fluid.

Do the inspection - they will find 10x the $100 worth of repairs (for better or for worse).
