 Removing OEM Illuminated Shift knob?

Iam about to put on a leatherZ Illuminated Shift knob.
I don't want to risk any snag or shearing of any wires.
Should I remove the oem shift knob first or the shift boot first?

Also, is there a good way to insert the wires when I put on the new knob?
It's seems pretty tight around the opening of the knob & I am assuming that part of the wires need to be inside the knob?

Thanks for any tips.

You should have enough slack on the stock wires to remove without too much trouble. I just remove the knob, then the boot, then disconnect the wires.

I'm not sure what you mean by running wires into the knob. Do you mean running the wiring through the boot? I remove the boot completely, slide the wires through the neck, connect wires, install the boot, then install the knob.

Just be careful not to pinch the wires when you are installing the new knob.

another tip: careful when pulling up on the knob - don't wanna crack your nose...

I am not sure how much slack you have in the wires. This is for sure: When you yank on the knob, it comes off with so much force that you will probably hit the ceiling of your BMW with it. Just to give you an idea the wires need to have at least 2 feet of slack or you might risk shearing the wires. This is if the wires are attached to the knob.

Hope this helps.

Hi Andy, I think what I was visualzing ( haven't removed anything yet to see for fact) was where the wires that came with the LZ knob would go.

Inside with the LZ Knob over the stem?
Wouldn't that cinch the wires because of the tight fit over the stem?

I used RL Canon's picture of the boot removal , plug & stem for visual purposes:

If you pull hard enough the connectors will disconnect while pulling. Nothing will break. No worries other then knocking yourself unconscious
