Hey guys, Ordered up some lug nuts (and studs) for my E30 race car, and the lug nuts are chrome . They have a "black coating that will not rust away like typical black oxide finish" under the chrome. Is there any way I can chemically strip the chrome off of them without harming the lugs? It's already starting to flake off on some of them (they were chromed by the guy that bought them, then used for one race before I bought them). In lieu of chemically stripping them, would it be OK to sandblas them? How would I then protect the metal afterwards? |

There is an acid process that will remove chromium plate. Best to get the whole scoop from someone that knows it well (not me; I only remember that you add acid to water but but not water to acid).
A chrome plating shop regularly runs parts to remove old chrome before replating. Find one in your area and maybe they'll run them for little or no money.

It is removed via chemicals. Not many places do it, because of the chemicals involved. It also depends on the type of plating, nickle, zinc, etc. Thickness. Sandblasting is also possible, but it would take a longer time to remove the plating. I would rather suggest you just buy a new set, much easier and faster.

Thanks guys. Turns out the studs aren't the brand he represented them as, so I'm sending them back anyhow .

whatever takes chrome off will strip them down to bare metal again, you'll have to have them recoated, why bother ... just go buy new ones, it will proably be cheaper
