I could ask this question in any number of unecessarily complicated ways, but I'll try not to. Basically, it boils down to this:
Is it possible to have a subframe issue (cracking, tearing, general destruction) that is visible from the top (inside the hatch) but NOT visible from the underside of the car?
Thanks,
John

It would be really hard for the crack not be on both sides. The majority of the crack are found on the underside. By the time it reaches the top side, it is already at a bad state. Have you tried the 368 coupe website? Z3 Coupe website
Or my website (z3power.net) or Robert's MZ3.net. There are a ton of posts from other owners that have experienced this issue.
Hope this helps.

John | It has been my experience (two cars) that the first signs of the trunkfloor giving out are at the spot welds between the differential mounting bracket and the left side longitudinal rail.
In the case of the Coupe, it would be easier to detect from the underside (sound deadening mat precludes visual inspection). If let go long enough, the trunkfloor would distort (pulled downward) until you'd see separation between the trunkfloor and left side longitudinal rail.
Though related, but distinctly separate*, would be the differential bracket itself failing. That would only be visible from the underside.
* the trunkfloor attachment could fail without the bracket cracking and the bracket could crack without the floor failing; chicken and egg thing...

This is the answer I was hoping to hear. I am asking this because I am about to add a layer of a liquid sound dampening material to the metal in the hatch area, yet I still want to be able to keep an eye on subframe issues. I don't want to obscure anything, and from the sound of it, anything visible from the top would also be visible from underneath. If I do have a subframe issue, then removing the extra sound dampening material will be the least of my concerns.

Any pictures illustrating exactly where I should be looking for potential issues from the underside?
Coupe's going in for one last warranty visit and I want to make sure anything problematic is addressed along an already substantial laundry list.
