 Hard Wire V1 Radar

Well I thought I would post this in case anyone wanted to use my idea. I am in the process of changing how my Valentine One radar detector is hard wired in my 02 M Roadster. In the 02 there is a blank space in the button panel where a blank sits above the shift boot. I bought a factory BMW DSC switch (Part #61 31 8 383 446, $44.86) and I am going to remove the DSC logo and have V1 put on it in the same font as the factory BMW DSC font. Put it in instead of the blank space and have that button control my on off for my V1 rather than the car power or twisting the V1 knob. Now this might be over kill but here is how I am doing this. Since the DSC switch is a momentary 12V switch I am running that into a latching relay that switchs from on/off with each press of the DSC button (Peripheral Part #PTR-7, SKU 609098083409). I will post pictures when I am finished and you can see what you think.

Parts - V1 $399.00, V1 Hardwire kit $19.00 (comes with V1), DSC switch $44.86 (Part #61 31 8 383 446), DSC switch connector/connecting wire $10.00 (Don't have Part #), Electronic latching relay $30.00 (I think retail price is higher than what I paid), Bosch relay $5.00.

Ron first did this with an alternate-action stepping relay before I came up with a cute, little substitute that fits into a 35mm film canister. (The substitute was a good opportunity to reach the minimum area on a PCB order.)

I still have some blank boards left if anyone is in the mood to DIY. You'll need perhaps $4 in parts if you are ordering from www.mouser.com: a magnetically-latching relay, a few diodes, capacitors and resistors – plus a Kodak 35mm film canister.

Here is a picture of a relay after 50 000 cycles:
