Change Clutch?
Well heres the skinny. A rod got loose and damaged my engine and they are doing a complete swap for a brand new engine. Block, rods...the whole nine yards. That is the good news. The other news is, it got me thinking what should I have the dealer toss on while the engine is out that will save me some time or labor dollars in the future. Any ideas are welcome. So the question is, should I have them put on a different clutch? If so any recommendations on clutchs?

What did you use? What brand, and what model was it for? They dont make one for the S54 specificially do they? I was thinking changing to the E46M3 clutch and lightweight flywheel next time...
How does it drive?
Everyone I have talked to about this told me it was a bad idea.
Details?

Details? | I did a lightweight flywheel with an S54. I origianlly went with just a normal lightweight and had all the problems previously described (mainly a huge harmonic vibration at 5,000 RPM with smaller ones at 2,500 and 1,000). It was really bad so I took it out. The problem was I really liked how it felt esspecially durning heal/toe downshifts. So I talked to Ben at Rogue Engineering about their sprung hub clutch and flywheel:
Rogue Flywheel
I figured what the hell and took the risk. First off they make you buy the rogue flywheel to match the sprung hub clutch. It is the same flywheel as bimmerworld (which is actually JB Racing - even the Rogue one is stamped JB racing) but it does have some little extra posts on it. So getting the more expensive rogue one is needed but I think they could have designed it to fit any flywheel if they had wanted to.
The sprung hub clutch does do its job pretty well though. The resonace at 5000 RPM still exsists but it is cut down by about a factor of 10. Also there is still an idle rattle (from the throw out bearing) if you sit with the car in neutral and the clutch pedal out. If you depress the clutch pedal the rattle goes away from the extra pressure on the throw out bearing. If you rev up and just let off the gas as it comes through the 5,000 and 2,500 RPM ranges it picks up the harmonic which does distract you from the beautiful engine sound. But again, this is about a factor of 10 better (more quite) than the solid clutch but not completely silent.
So for me it was a good compromise since I really do like how it performs. The noise is cut down to the point that is acceptable to me. Now all the arguments about it is tearing the engine apart - I don't think any of us really know. I took an oil sample before I put it on and I have an oil sample in the mail now with about 6,000 miles on the flywheel - we will see if there is any damage.
