I learned something about 6 speed trannys..

So I was talking to the guy rebuilding the diff for me. And was talking to him about the differences between the Euro M3 EVO 6 speed and the one in the E46M3.

He spends time building differentials and transmission for the Grand Am series among other things.. And he basically told me that the E46 tranny had a larger input shaft, but otherwise, it was identical in every way. He said the input shaft looked like the one from the CSI. Anyways, I though it was interesting.

The casings are the same. So it turns out they are indeed interchangable. But you need a different flywheel/clutch for each of them.

So the EVO tranny is still the cheapest way to go. But in the event that mine goes boom, I can just get the E46 unit and a new clutch setup... and a grinding wheel.

I asked about the one from the 330PP and he said it was just fine as long as your not going over 250 hp... LOL.

Anyways... I gotta get a new clutch line, project projects projects.

Thanks for the info. I had always wondered that given that given ther getrag ID numbers differed in only that letter. I wondered if that meant the casing was different in someway or maybe the gear ratios were different - so thanks for clearing that up!

What is the grinding wheel for?
What is retail on the E46 6 speed tranny?

You have to grind down a few spots for clearence.

The E46 trannys are pretty expensive on the used market. Mostly because you cant buy spare parts for them and the race teams are going through the housings like toilet paper.

Apparently, when the race clutch explodes, it takes with it the bell housing. I bet you can get internal gears pretty cheap, but you wont be getting any full transmissions dirt cheap till the next gen comes along.

Anyways, thats what I hear. If its the same internals, then I am just fine with the EVO. It actually fits, even if its very tight. You gotta have that extra gear. Its groovy.
