Big time OT: Hot water heater help needed...

Ok, I just bought a dump. Its going to be nice one day... Lots of work.

Problem #254: Hot water doesnt last...

Ok, so the hot water heater heats up the water scalding hot, I set it to 140 thinking it would help.

Its a dual element hot water heater, about 3 or 4 feet high, normal diameter. It says it was manufactured in 2004.

Anyways, get in the shower, and the water is great for about the first minute, then it starts to trail off so after about 3 or 4 minutes the water is luke warm and then almost cold.

Now, I dont have a water miser shower head on the shower, so that could be the culprit, but is it possible to go though that much hot water in 4 minutes?

Otherwise, this thing is not working right. So what do you recommend? Any steps to take. I looked it up on google and I am going to test the elements tonight...

But I figured that you guys could fix anything.

First, I'd fire up the coupe, turn the traffic pro on, and program the nearest Lowe's store for your destination.. Oh, don't forget to get the special roof racks first, like the ones Bob L has on his coupe.

Hmmm, strange that a 2004 would have a faulty heating element but you never know.

A few months back, I experienced the same problem you did, although my water heater was manufactured in 2000. I bought a new heating element at Lowe's and it was a very painless and easy fix. I think the part was less than $5 bucks, IIRC. It solved the problem.

Yeah, well if you saw this dump, you wouldnt be so surprised.

I dont think it was installed with the most care. And its really pretty sad the way they did it. Just stuck it in a closet. On the carpet. Didnt even put a drain pan under it.

Thanks for the help, I just wanted to confirm my guess.

Oh, was it your top or your bottom element that was out?

Whoa there cowboy!

Do you have little white specks getting caught in the screens of your faucets? Is your dishwasher or washer filling slowly?

The sneaker problem with hot water heaters is that the dip tube goes away.

The dip tube is in the cold water inlet, and is supposed to put the cold water to the tank bottom, instead of the top. This makes the whole tank hot water, thus long showers, not just the top couple inches, equalling cold showers.

I've had 2 replaced, I thought it was an element problem.

If this is the problem, flush out the tank, and after a day or so of use, clean all the washer and faucet screens.
