Strut Brace
I've ordered up my new shocks and springs and figure I'll put in a strut brace at the same time. This is a seemingly low-tech mod, so I'm not sure how to pick which brand.
My criteria is only that it fits/works well (does not rub anything) and that it works. Bling is not a big factor.
Also, I read somewhere that steel is better than aluminum because aluminum will fatigue at some point. I'm not sure if this is true.
I'd appreciate your thoughts on these two I found on ebay. Of course, if you have something better than these, please let me know. I don't have to get it off ebay.
Low $ and hinged at mounting: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=7937766775
Bling and 2.5 pounds but aluminum: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=7938343577
Thanks much

| | Reply » Strut Brace | No doubt Strong Strut is a nicely designed and built piece of hardware. I was hoping that there is hardware to connect the strut towers for less than the $400 Strong Strut gets. Maybe something equally functional, but made with less exotic techniques?
| | Reply » Strut Brace | Certainly there are less expensive options around as you've found out. And, I agree, the Strong-Strut is a bit pricey... and I suspect that it has more to do with the fact that their products are marketed exclusively to BMW owners. If it was to Honda Civic owners, I'm sure the pricing would be totally different.
Being a recent customer, the product is very high in quality and for a strut bar to do what it is meant to do, it shouldn't haven any pivot points... which the SS does not. If you don't want to spend that much, try looking into Electordyne (racing dynamics), Dinan, etc. I wouldn't trust anything from Ebay even if the items are cheap. If you buy from there, once you've received your item and it turns out to be unsatisfactory... you're pretty much sunk. $50 spent is still $50 spent. Do it right the first time.

a) Hinges don't matter. In fact the first versions of the SS had hinges, but went solid just to impress customers who don't know any better. Both work the same.
b) Since the normal loads for a strut bar are tension (pulling) NOT bending, there is little possibility of fatigue. And steel DOES fatigue if bent.
